The grass ain’t always greener

Summer is always the best time to get those little tasks around the house out of the way that you have been putting off all year. It also helps that the weather is nice and sunny so many people don’t mind spending their time finishing off jobs outside.

It’s usually about this time when your attention may turntop you there.

If you want a nice new green lawn to grow grass from scratch.

I often get asked around this time of the year when the best timeto grow grass is, whether you should use seeds or instant turf and of course which type of grass is best.

So here are our to give it a crack.

Timing

It’s not impossible for new lawn grow in summer, but given Australia generally is a harsh, hot environment laying or sowing turf is not a good idea during this time. Without adequate water the grass will go in to encourage it, which is not very practical.

So when is best I hear you ask. If summer is to allow for root growth. That leaves us with autumn and spring.

If you’re going to do it at the start of the season when the temperatures aren’t too hot, but there’s still enough time before the ground cools off and allow the rootsto develop.

Spring is also an ideal time between September to November and will allow your grass to develop before the heat rolls in.

Instant turf or seeds?

So if you’re reading this article, I am guessing you have been asking yourself the same question – which one is better? Well, as you may know by now the benefit of instant turf is that it is just that  instant. It comes pre-sown and essentially all you need to do is roll it out on to your dirt patch, give it some water and it’s all done. The down side is that it is more expensive.

Seeds on the other hand are relatively inexpensive and you have the flexibility of throwing them around wherever you wish to. It also develops a better root system as it has started its life in the one spot.

What type of grass do I need for my lawn?

There is no best type of grass for your lawn. It’s like asking someone what is the best pet to buy.  For example, you might love dogs but a dog might not be the best pet for you in your particular environment. Likewise, with lawn there are different conditions that affect how it might thrive in your garden. So how do you choose?

There are several factors that can influence the variety of turf you choose including; soil conditions, sunlight, water availability, maintenance requirements and don’t forget the variety you might prefer according to your personal taste.

There are many seed varieties you can choose from, but before I cause you more confusion these are my top five types that are regularly used in Australia.

Those include:

‘Santa Ana’ Couch

‘Sir Walter’ Buffalo

Tall fescue

Kykuyu

Zoysia Grass

To understand which one best suits you, I recommend reading this article.
